A Pap test is used to check your cervix for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells can sometimes turn into cervical cancer if they arent treated. A Pap test can be part of a pelvic exam. First, your healthcare provider will place an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum will be opened so that your cervix can be seen. Next, your provider will use a scraper or brush to gently collect cells from your cervix. Your cells will be examined at a lab under a microscope to see if any of them are abnormal. It usually takes about one to three weeks to get your test results. If you have questions about this test or your test results, talk to your provider.

There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
Class 5 is cancer that has started to grow deeper into the cervix. This stage of cancer can spread to other parts of the body. The new classification system replaces the traditional classes with terms describing the microscopic changes in cervical cells.
It can take as long as three weeks to receive your test results. If your test shows that something might not be normal, your doctor will contact you and figure out how best to follow up. There are many reasons why test results might not be normal. It usually does not mean you have cancer.
A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) screens for cervical cancer. The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
The Pap smear shouldnt hurt, but it might be uncomfortable. The good news is, its over quickly.

Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) is a common abnormal result on a Pap test. Its also known as mild dysplasia. LSIL means that your cervical cells show mild abnormalities. A LSIL, or abnormal Pap result, doesnt mean that you have cancer.
