This is the most uncomfortable video I can imagine myself filming. Even right now Im not sure its going to end up on YouTube. But I really hope it does because it has an important message. If you are due to go for your smear test, please please please go to your smear test. I hope you have a little bit of a cringe with me but ultimately I hope that you dont think Oh I wont go along just in case the thing that happened to Kate happens to me as well. For those of you who dont know how a smear test works, there is information in the description and I strongly encourage you to look that up if youre going to take any kind of medical advice from this because again, I am NOT a doctor. I am NOT a doctor and what Im about to describe sounds confusing and questionable and thats because Im not a doctor. I dont know what Im talking about, I dont know how these things work. Testing (cervical cancer screening) should start at age 21 years. Women ages 21-29 years should have a Pap test every 3 years. Women ages 30-65 years should have a Pap test and an HPV test (called co-testing) every 5 years. It is ok to have only a Pap test without the HPV test every 3 years.
Pap Smear Procedure Youll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool (speculum) into your vagina. Theyll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls. This allows them to see your cervix. Your doctor will use a swab to take a sample of cells from your cervix.
The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause cell changes on the cervix. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
A procedure in which a small brush is used to gently remove cells from the surface of the cervix and the area around it so they can be checked under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. A Pap smear may also help find other conditions, such as infections or inflammation.
George Nicholas Papanicolaou was a pioneer in elucidating the physiology and cytologic characteristics of the female reproductive system. He is best known for creating the Papanicolaou test, commonly known as the Pap smear, which revolutionised the early detection of cervical cancer.
