The Five Types of Building Construction Fire-resistive. Non-combustible. Ordinary. Heavy timber. Wood-framed.
Type I buildings are the Cadillac of construction types and are made of high-quality non-combustible materials, such as poured concrete and steel framing thats protected or insulated from fire, and are rated to withstand fires for two to three hours. This rating provides the highest levels of safety.
V-B is the least restrictive building type with regard to materials. You can build your building out of any material and it doesnt need to be rated. It is also the most restrictive in terms of size restrictions in Table 503. V-A gives you a lot more options if your building cant work as an unrated structure.
There are four types of structures; Frame: made of separate members (usually thin pieces) put together. Shell: encloses or contains its contents. Solid (mass): made almost entirely of matter. liquid (fluid): braking fluid making the brakes.
Type 1 structures are constructed of concrete and protected steel (steel coated with a fire resistant material, most often a concrete mixture), and are designed to hold fire for an extended amount of time in order to keep the fire at bay in the room and/or floor of origin.
Type 5 construction is found in many modern homes. The walls and roofs are made of combustible materials most commonly wood. TYPE V-A--Protected Wood Frame. (Commonly used in the construction of newer apartment buildings; there is no exposed wood visible.)
The most stringent of building types when it comes to fire-resistance rating requirements, a Type I building, including its roof, must be composed of noncombustible materials like concrete and steel.
TYPE IA (ISO 6): The main structural elements are noncombustible. Examples of these materials would be masonry and concrete. Basically, all concrete construction.
Type I: Noncombustible (or limited-combustible) construction with a high level of fire resistance, typically concrete construction. Type II: Noncombustible (or limited-combustible) construction with a lower level of fire resistance than Type I, typically this is steel construction with or without fireproofing.
