We look at the work from the scientific method of inquiry as well as the work from the UCI Writing Project for the Inquiry Chart. The Inquiry Chart is also known as a predecessor or grandfather of the KWL. The purpose of the Inquiry Chart is to activate and assess students background knowledge. This is a great strategy to do in the beginning of a unit of study. The Inquiry Chart builds a culture of low affective filter in the classroom while also allowing students to orally produce language. In this way, the Inquiry Chart becomes an authentic assessment of students oral language production.
