going back to our first file we are now going to practice how to create captions in ms word now whenever youre working on your technical reports or your thesis or whatever formal document you have you may need to put some figure number or diagram number or table numbers in your objects for example this one should be diagram one this one should be diagram two and so on now it may happen that you do not have all your diagrams yet but you want to put captions for your existing diagrams and ms word can actually give you a number to be assigned for that diagram automatically so instead of you trying to figure out what order or what diagram number you are supposed to give this certain object ms word can figure that out for you for example this is supposed to be our figure 1 and this is our figure 2. now im going to create a caption for this using references insert caption as you could see ms word is now asking what should be the caption name or title for this figure and its being numbered

To add captions in Word, first select the object, table or equation to which you want to apply a caption. Then click the References tab in the Ribbon. Then click the Insert Caption button in the Captions button group to open the Caption dialog box.
If that box is grayed out, it means you did not have the object selected when you clicked the Insert Caption button. You can hit Close in the caption pop-up, select the object, and then click the Insert Caption button if you would like to start again and use Position.
Click References Insert Caption AutoCaption and clear the check mark next to each item for which you do not want Word to create captions automatically.
On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. On the Captions dialog box, click AutoCaption, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want Word to automatically add captions to. You can also choose which position to add captions to in the Position drop-down list.
Changing Caption Numbering Styles Display the References tab of the ribbon. Click the Insert Caption tool, in the Captions group. Click on the Numbering button. Using the Format drop-down list, choose the format you want used for your caption numbers. Click on OK to close the Caption Numbering dialog box.
Option 1: Use a Text Box Make sure the figure is in-line (not floating). Make sure the title or caption is not in a text box. That is, it has to be ordinary text. Select both the figure and the title or caption. Insert the Text Box. Note: The Text Box will stay on the same page as the paragraph to which it is anchored.
To insert a caption: ALT + S + P . These shortcuts work with English, they will be different in your native language.
