So imagine that you have a school report that youre working on, or maybe youre turning in a project for work, and youve got lots of pages and lots of sections in there. Well, a table of contents can make it easier to get back to the content that people want to refer back to. So how do you do that? Its actually easier than you think. And Ive pulled up a sample school report here. I know Ive been out of school for a little while, but brings back memories when I jump into this. Lets jump on my PC and Ill show you how to do this. Put your cursor where you want to add the table of contents. Go to References Table of Contents. and choose an automatic style. If you make changes to your document that affect the table of contents, update the table of contents by right-clicking the table of contents and choosing Update Field.

The problem is that only if the entire paragraph is formatted as a heading will it be included in the TOC. The easiest way to make sure that you apply the Linked heading style to the entire paragraph is to NOT select any word or phrase in the heading paragraph.
