Make sure to check out those videos for how we analyze our list of ZIP codes so that we could summarize them with the pivot table and figure out how many of our visitors were from in state, out of state, and international. What is a zip code? The first digit: this number refers to the national area, or defined group of states. The second and third digit: this set of numbers signifies a region within this group, such as a large city. The fourth and fifth digit: these numbers represent the associate post office or delivery area of a region.
Steps Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. Press Ctrl+1 to load the Format Cells dialog. The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.
The first digit of the ZIP code is used as follows: 0 = Connecticut (CT), Massachusetts (MA), Maine (ME), New Hampshire (NH), New Jersey (NJ), Puerto Rico (PR), Rhode Island (RI), Vermont (VT), Virgin Islands (VI), APO Europe (AE), FPO Europe (AE) 1 = Delaware (DE), New York (NY), Pennsylvania (PA)
