Via tenting Vs. The hole can be partially filled with an LPI solder mask or the filling can be washed off. Plugged vias are fully filled. Through-hole vias should be tented on both sides to reduce the chances of any chemical entrapment. The material for filling can be applied on a single side or both sides.
Conductive materials like copper or silver epoxy are used to fill the holes. These metals aid in effectively transferring the electric signal and improve the thermal conductivity of the via. The conductive filling can also help to deviate the heat from large components like ICs, BGAs, microcontrollers, and processors.
What is the purpose of a via in PCBs? Vias are tiny conductive paths that establish electrical connections between different PCB layers. Depending on their functionality, vias are classified as through-hole, blind, buried, and microvias. Microvias are further divided into stacked and staggered vias.
Via filling, on the other hand, involves filling the via holes with a conductive material, usually copper, to establish electrical connections between different layers of the PCB. Via plugging is simpler and cost-effective compared to via filling, and it allows for greater design flexibility.
In the PCB manufacturing process, there are five different methods to handle vias: via soldermask opening, via covered with soldermask, via filled with soldermask, via filled with resin, and via filled with copper paste.
Via Filling (LPI method) In this process, a drilled ALU sheet is used to push standard solder resist ink (LPI) into via holes that need to be filled. The solder mask process is carried out after this screen printing process. 100% guaranteed result is assured in this process.
First, the hole wall is plated to make it conductive. Later, the barrel is filled with conductive (copper) or non-conductive (resin) material. The purpose of filling vias is to: Avoid the entry of any impurities.
Thermal vias (vias used to conduct heat away from a component) have been shown to marginally benefit from a conductive fill as the entire structure helps transmit thermal energy out and away from the source.
