As far as we know, as long as you have a committee letter, schools do not also require a specific non-science letter. We advise you to gather three to six letters of recommendation, two of which speak to your abilities in science.
Some medical schools may strongly prefer a committee letter, but they are unlikely to reject an application because a letter is not available. In fact, many colleges and universities do not offer a committee letter on behalf of their applicants.
Failing to provide a committee letter when its required can put an applicant at a disadvantage in the admissions process. While committee letters are preferred by some medical schools, its essential to note that not all applicants have access to a premedical advisory committee or may choose not to use one.
A pre-health committee letter is a composite letter of recommendation typically written by a schools pre-health advisors and sometimes one or more additional faculty members who oversee premed advising. It differs from a regular letter of recommendation which is written by a single writer of your choosing.
How to Write (Format) A letter of recommendation for medical school should fill at least one entire page (usually 400 600 words) and contain an introduction, up to 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. If the letter is being submitted by mail or fax, it should also include a standard letterhead.
Your medical school recommendation letter should be exceptional. Dont ask for a letter from someone who doesnt describe you as an excellent candidate for medical school. Your referral should be able to talk about your best skills, your most outstanding achievements, and your virtuous character.
The author of your committee letter will want to highlight whatever distinguishes you, personally as well as professionally, from other applicants. The committee letter can be particularly important to career-changer post-bacc students, given that they have often been out of college for a number of years.
If your undergrad institution or post-bacc program does not offer a committee letter to its students and alumni for medical school, please remember that applicants are accepted to medical school every year without such a document.
