so manufacturers love to say that yes their wood filler is stainable but is it really so iamp;#39;ve got three different popular brands of wood filler here as well as a diy version and today iamp;#39;m going to put them to the test all right so here we go each type of wood filler you see here got tested twice um one with a dark chestnut stain the other with a lighter gun stock stain so if i flip over our minwax this was the gun stock and you can still see so i would say that it took the color pretty well but obviously it still stands out wherever you have those holes itamp;#39;s pretty obvious where you had to use wood filler and to be honest i actually donamp;#39;t think thatamp;#39;s their fault thereamp;#39;s not much they can do about the fact that the texture is going to be different and that itamp;#39;s not going to match the rest of the grain of the wood so i actually think it did as good of a job as it could have but on a lighter stain like this itamp;#39;s not just goi

Make sure your wood project and wood preparation products are at room temperature before starting. Like the air in your work area, both the wood surface and any wood preparation product you are using should be above 65 F.
Oil-based stains, for instance, behave better in colder weather than other types. You can also attempt to warm the wood stain before using it. Bring it inside for some time or dip the can in warm water.
Most stains can be applied from about 50 F to 90 F but many people dont realize this range refers to the temperature of the wood surface, not the air. A day thats 70F and sunny can push deck surface temperatures above 90F leading to application challenges and shortened open times.
For a solid stain you can typically apply them all the way down to 35 degrees fahrenheit. Semi-transparent stains have a tighter window and you really should fall within that 50-90 degree temperature range.
If your deck or patio measures up to 550 square feet, you will need to buy 2 gallons of stain. For very large decks and patios, up to 700 square feet, you will need 3 to 4 gallons of stain to complete the project.
Here are some quick tips. Stain your fence or deck when the temperature is between 40-80 degrees Fahrenheit. If its too hot, the stain will not soak into the boards evenly and it will peel off in the first month. If its too cold, the stain wont cure properly and it may not penetrate the wood.
How warm does it need to be stain wood? The minimum temperature for staining wood is around 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Even then, some oil-based stains might work, as they generally take longer to dry, even in cold weather. Moreover, a temperature that is too high is also problematic.
