What is a Via? A via is a small drilled hole that goes through two or more adjacent layers. It allows the signals and power to travel between layers. As the circuits between the layers of a multilayer PCB are independent of each other, vias are important means to establish inter-layer connections. Seminar: Designing the Routing and Signal Return Path of Digital PCBs. PCB via filling is a technique in which the plated hole is filled with a conductive or non-conductive material. It enhances the reliability of the circuit board by reducing the possibility of air or liquid getting trapped. Via filling, on the other hand, involves filling the via holes with a conductive material, usually copper, to establish electrical connections between different layers of the PCB. Via plugging is simpler and cost-effective compared to via filling, and it allows for greater design flexibility.
So while the manufacturer covers the hole completely, its called either a masked or filled via, if the annual ring is merely covered over with the solder mask, it is called tenting the via. First of all, provide the solder mask to the vias as the protection.
The most common materials used in conductive filled vias are copper or silver epoxy. They do very well in conducting a large amount of heat away from components as the metallic nature of the fill transfers heat away from the IC to the other side of the board where it is further dissipated by a heat sink.
Thermal vias (vias used to conduct heat away from a component) have been shown to marginally benefit from a conductive fill as the entire structure helps transmit thermal energy out and away from the source. In the PCB manufacturing process, there are five different methods to handle vias: via soldermask opening, via covered with soldermask, via filled with soldermask, via filled with resin, and via filled with copper paste.
