Watch closely for changes in your health, and be sure to contact your doctor or nurse advice line if: You have vaginal bleeding or pain for more than 2 days after the test. It is normal to have a small amount of bleeding for a day or two after the test.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap test. These may wash away or hide concerning cells. Try not to schedule a Pap test during your menstrual period. While it can be done at this time, it is best not to do so.
The general rule is to avoid getting a smear test on a day when you have your period. Its not impossible to have a smear when youre on your period, but the menstrual blood can make the sample harder to analyse. This may mean that you dont get a clear result and that you end up needing a second test.
You shouldnt have a Pap smear during your period. Heavy bleeding can affect the accuracy of the test. If your test is scheduled for that time of the month, ask your doctor if you can reschedule. For the most accurate Pap smear, doctors recommend taking the following steps, starting 48 hours before your test.
Technically, you can get a Pap smear while on your period, but its still better to get one if youre not menstruating. The presence of blood may alter the accuracy of your results, especially if you have a heavy flow. Spotting may not present as much of a problem in terms of testing accuracy.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
All leukoplakia patches in the transformation zone of the cervix should be biopsied or excised. Typically, leukoplakia appears as a white plaque on the cervix, with a shiny, waxy surface and a sharp, raised margin. Leukoplakia due to high-grade precancerous lesions or cancer will always be in the transformation zone.
Getting a Pap smear with a light period or spotting This small amount of blood is less likely to affect the results of the test. However, the best time to have a Pap test done is about two weeks after the start of your last period.
The iodine stains healthy cells brown, while abnormal cells maintain their typical white or yellow color. A biopsy may be performed in which the physician removes a small amount of cervical tissue for examination by a pathologist. This is the only sure way to determine whether the abnormal cells indicate cancer.
