Chinking is the the flexible sealant used during your log homes construction or maintenance to seal joins between the logs, gaps, holes and checking.
Apply a good quality, siliconized latex caulk (not pure silicon) into the check, bringing it out close, but not even with the surface of the log. Skim off the excess caulking with your finger or a putty knife, making sure the caulking makes a strong, consistent contact with the top and bottom of the crack.
It is not necessary to seal checks on the bottom half of round logs since they do not collect water. For a uniform appearance of your home, you may want to seal them as well. It is not usually necessary to seal checks or fissures that are less than 1/4 wide since they cannot accumulate that much water.
Caulking is a similar material to chinking, but usually has no texture or a very light texture. Caulking also generally has more elasticity than chinking products. Because of this, caulking works better in smaller joints (i.e. Ľ to 2 wide).
Can I use regular caulking to fill gaps and checking in my log cabin? No, it is recommended to use products like Log Builder caulking or Log Jam Chinking that are specifically designed for log homes.
Purpose: Log cabin caulk is your first line of defense, ideal for sealing smaller gaps and cracks that naturally appear in wood over time. Flexibility: A defining trait of log cabin caulk is its elasticity.
But when it comes to the language surrounding the sealant between logs, many people call chinking log caulk. Log caulk and log chinking are often used interchangeably, but these sealants are completely different. In fact, you should never, ever caulk a log home.
