(brooding music) - [Instructor] What do you think of when you think of cryogenics? Futuristic science, freezing your body for the future? Did you know that NASA does research in cryogenics? Cryogenic rocket fuel that is. Itamp;#39;s called cryogenic because itamp;#39;s extremely cold, down to -423 degrees Fahrenheit. Cryogenic rocket fuel is made up of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. These liquids are stored in special tanks inside the rocket. When the rocket needs to launch or travel in space, the fuel is mixed and ignited, which creates a powerful explosion that propels the rocket. It also has the advantage of being very lightweight, which is important for space travel where we need to carry as little weight as possible in order to travel as far as possible. But because these fluids must be kept at very low temperatures, handling and storing can be a real challenge. This is where you come in. Youamp;#39;ll design and build a prototype of a cold fluid storage device and transfer

Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched by the United States when it was sent into space on January 31, 1958.
But Sputnik itself isnt in orbit around Earth any longer. In fact, it was so short-lived that by time the United States successfully launched Explorer 1, the first American satellite in space, Sputnik 2, carrying the first animal in space, had already been orbiting Earth for months.
It remains in orbit around the Sun, between the orbits of Earth and Mars.
On Jan. 31, 1958, the United States entered the Space Age with its first successful launch of a satellite, Explorer 1, from Cape Canaveral.
January 31 Events In History 1865 General Robert E. Lee becomes general-in-chief over the Confederate army. 1936 The Green Hornet radio show debuts. 1943 German troops surrendered at Stalingrad, marking the first big defeat of Hitlers armies in World War II.
At last, on January 31, 1958, the United States succeeded in launching its first satellite, the Explorer. The Explorer was still slighter than Sputnik, but its launch sent it deeper into space. The Soviets responded with yet another launch, and the space race continued.
Yuri Gagarin from the Soviet Union was the first human in space. His vehicle, Vostok 1 circled Earth at a speed of 27,400 kilometers per hour with the flight lasting 108 minutes. Vostoks reentry was controlled by a computer. Unlike the early US human spaceflight programs, Gagarin did not land inside of capsule.
The resulting Explorer-1 satellite was successfully launched and placed into Earth orbit on January 31, 1958. Explorer-1, also known unofficially as Satellite 1958 alpha, transmitted data on micrometeorites and cosmic radiation for 105 days.
