Damage to any part of your knee can cause excess joint fluid to accumulate. Injuries that can cause fluid buildup in and around the knee joint include: Torn ligament, particularly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Cartilage (meniscus) tear. Irritation from overuse.
You do NOT have to sleep in this brace after the first week. In all, the ACL rehabilitation takes six (6) months. This is the time needed for the inserted graft to mature to a point where Dr. Williams is assured that the graft strength is suitable for you to resume all activities.
In patients who have only a partial tear, nonsurgical treatment may be an option. Some patients who have a complete ACL tear do not require surgery and are able to return to activities, such as cycling or running with or without a brace. Your doctor will discuss all treatment options with you.
If you continue to use your knee after an ACL injury, you only make the problem worse. You fuel ongoing inflammation, the ligament continues to weaken, and a partial tear is likely to turn into a complete rupture. The ACL ligament takes a long time to heal even when you seek early treatment.
If youre able to put pressure on your hurt leg, you may notice that its harder than normal to walk. Some people find that the knee joint feels looser than it should. Less range of motion. After you damage your ACL, its very likely that you wont be able to bend and flex your knee like you normally would.
These tears almost always need to be treated surgically, typically using a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopy. While a very few patients may restore some of their lost function without surgery, the knee will remain unstable, and that means the chances of reinjuring it are very high.
A position that applies too much pressure on your affected leg will not only cause discomfort but can slow your healing. Patients healing from ACL surgery should sleep in a supine position, i.e. on their back instead of the stomach or side. Put a soft pillow beneath your leg to elevate it comfortably.
Avoid doing TKE, heel raises, and leg balancing exercises (specifically the ones performed in yoga) until the swelling has subsided post-surgery. Start by doing heel slides where you aim to gently stretch the leg forward while keeping heel contact on the floor.
