One of the log chinking materials we recommend is Log Jam chinking because it: Resembles traditional mortar, thanks to its texturing. Provides superior elasticity. Holds a fire-resistance rating (the only log home chinking to do so)
Purpose: Log cabin caulk is your first line of defense, ideal for sealing smaller gaps and cracks that naturally appear in wood over time. Flexibility: A defining trait of log cabin caulk is its elasticity.
When learning how to seal a log home, its important that the stain you use be chemically compatible with the caulk you use. If theyre not compatible, the caulk wont stick and youll end up where you started. Good news: all Sashco stains are compatible with Sashco caulks.
The 7 Best Caulking and Chinking Products for Your Log Home Log Jam Is a Premier Chinking Product. Perma-Chink Is an International Favorite. Energy Seal Is Made Specifically for Log Homes. Check Mate 2 Is a Powerful Log Check Sealant. Woodsman Caulk Is a Useful and All-around Log Home Sealant. Resources and References:
Apply a good quality, siliconized latex caulk (not pure silicon) into the check, bringing it out close, but not even with the surface of the log. Skim off the excess caulking with your finger or a putty knife, making sure the caulking makes a strong, consistent contact with the top and bottom of the crack.
But when it comes to the language surrounding the sealant between logs, many people call chinking log caulk. Log caulk and log chinking are often used interchangeably, but these sealants are completely different. In fact, you should never, ever caulk a log home.
Caulking is a similar material to chinking, but usually has no texture or a very light texture. Caulking also generally has more elasticity than chinking products. Because of this, caulking works better in smaller joints (i.e. Ľ to 2 wide).
Also, dont caulk plumbing fixtures or areas that have moving parts like hinges or sliding shower doors.
