If the scratches are small enough then the primer can act as a filler for them and let them disappear. However, if the scratches are too big then filling will not be possible and will have to be done with a specialised filler or have to be sanded using the progressively finer grits.
Follow these tips to repair the damage. Clean the wood trim with a damp rag to remove all the debris and dirt. Lightly sand the damaged area and wipe off all the dust. Fill in the scratches with wood filler putty, making sure to even out the putty. Sand the dried putty until its even and smooth.
If its a gouge, youll need to sand the surface scratches until its smooth and even. Once youre done, you can apply a wood filler, such as putty, before repainting it. You can use an abrasive pad or fine sandpaper to remove a light scratch.
How to Fix Light Wood Abrasions Wipe the surface with a clean rag to remove any excess dust or dirt from the repair area. Squeeze a small amount of scratch remover onto the cloth. Apply the scratch remover to the surface and buff it over the damaged area. Let the scratch remover to dry completely.
STEP 1: Sand and clean the wood surface in need of repair. STEP 2: Use a preconditioner on the damaged area to prevent color discoloration. STEP 3: Apply the wood filler using a putty knife. STEP 4: Allow the wood filler to dry completely.
Lightly buff the stained surface with No. 0000 steel wool, and wipe it clean with a tack cloth. Apply a new coat of the same finish already on the surface -- varnish, penetrating resin, shellac, or lacquer -- over the newly stained area, feathering out the new finish into the surrounding old finish.
