A machine image is a Compute Engine resource that stores all the configuration, metadata, permissions, and data from multiple disks of a virtual machine (VM) instance. You can use a machine image in many system maintenance, backup and recovery, and instance cloning scenarios.
An instance is a virtual server in the cloud. Its configuration at launch is a copy of the AMI that you specified when you launched the instance. You can launch different types of instances from a single AMI. An instance type essentially determines the hardware of the host computer used for your instance.
An AMI includes the following: One or more Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots, or, for instance-store-backed AMIs, a template for the root volume of the instance (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications).
AMIs provide a template for the root volume required to launch a particular instance. This will typically include the operating systems, an application server and applications. Also included in the AMI are launch permissions that restrict the ability to launch instances from that AMI to defined AWS accounts.

An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a master image for the creation of virtual servers -- known as EC2 instances -- in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. The machine images are like templates that are configured with an operating system and other software that determine the users operating environment.
All AMIs are categorized as either backed by Amazon EBS or backed by instance store. Amazon EBS-backed AMI The root device for an instance launched from the AMI is an Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume created from an Amazon EBS snapshot.
