RAW files contain uncompressed and unprocessed image data, allowing photographers to capture practically every detail they see in their viewfinder. The RAW file format stores the largest amount of detail out of any raster file type, which photographers can then edit, compress and convert into other formats.
Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
Similar to a photographers raw photos, raw video files require post-processing, color grading, and editing to achieve the desired visual style. By providing raw video files, you risk your clients seeing your work in an unfinished state, potentially diminishing the overall quality and impact of your production.
A RAW file is lossless, meaning it captures uncompressed data from your camera sensor. Sometimes referred to as a digital negative, you can think of a RAW file as the raw ingredients of a photo that will need to be processed in order to bring out the pictures full potential.
The primary reason that raw footage appears grey and desaturated is that it is unprocessed data straight from the cameras sensor. Additionally, the cameras color profile is typically set to a neutral setting, which aims to accurately capture the scenes color information without adding any bias or adjustment.
Raw video is uncompressed, right? Well, it is, and raw video is always uncompressed. However, uncompressed video isnt always raw. To understand the difference between raw video and uncompressed video, we need to understand how a digital camera captures images.
There are several factors. Shoot videos in low lighting conditions. Use improper camera settings combination. Shoot videos with a lower aperture setting.
The color of raw footage actually is flatthat is, it was shot in a video type called flat that doesnt include a lot of the color information in a finished video file. The footage will look lifeless, but only so that the editors have the most control over the end result.
