Quotations within a Quotation Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
Please see CMOS 6.11: When single quotation marks are nested within double quotation marks, and two of the marks appear next to each other, a space between the two marks, though not strictly required, aids legibility. (You can find this by typing single quotation marks into the Search box or by looking in the index
For the in-text citation, include the author and year of both the original and secondary sources. Add as cited in between the sources in the in-text citation. For example, (Smith, 2015, as cited in Jonson, 2019).
When researching, you may find many instances of a quotation within a quotation (that is, the author you are quoting has quoted another author) in scholarly essays. In this case, you use the single quotation marks () for the quote within the quote.
Your in-text citation should include both authors: the author(s) of the original source and the author(s) of the secondary source. For example: (Habermehl, 1985, as cited in Kersten, 1987). In your reference list you should provide the details of the secondary source (the source you read).
Citing a quote within a quote is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. List the original authors last name. Include the date of publication of the original. Add as cited in then the name of the work. Follow with the publishing date of the cited work. List the page the information can be found on.
Rule: Use single quotation marks inside double quotation marks when you have a quotation within a quotation. Bobbi told me, Delia said, This will never work. Notice that what Delia said was enclosed in single quotation marks.
