Chapman points, also known as Chapmans reflex points, are discrete, palpable tissue areas resulting from a neuro lymphatic congestion caused by underlying visceral dysfunction. They are commonly located between the skin and subcutaneous tissue.
Deep firm rotary movement in the periumbilical region 1 superior and 1 lateral to the umbilicus is thought to identify irritation or dysfunction in the kidneys. This space is the Chapmans reflex point believed to correspond with the appendix.
Chapmans Reflexes are specific skin and fascial points that correlate with internal organ dysfunction, discovered by osteopathic physician Frank Chapman in the early 20th century. These reflex points, when tender to palpation, can indicate a corresponding pathology within the body.
Principle of Treatment Make contact with the reflex point. For this purpose, very gently place a finger on the point and press only lightly. Reflex points are often very sensitive, so it is imperative to proceed with caution. The finger remains on the point and treatment is by gentle rotations.
Chapmans points or Chapmans reflex points are palpable areas of fascial tissue abnormality that develop secondarily to irritation or dysfunction of a target organ, and they are often considered to be a visceral reflex. They are characteristically small, smooth and firm areas that are 2-3mm in size.
An important diagnostic aid related to viscerosomatic reflexes and specific to osteopathic medicine is the identification of Chapmans points. Chapmans points are small, tender, palpable fascial congestions deep to the subcutaneous tissue.
This space is the Chapmans reflex point believed to correspond with the appendix. Gentle rotary movement around the 12th rib tip on the right is believed by Chapman to correspond with the appendix and thought to identify irritation of the appendix.
