Wondering if you can still come to your gynecology appointment when youre on your period? Most of the time, yes. If its for your annual exam, sometimes the Pap Smear Test can be inconclusive if youre bleeding heavily, but if its one of the lighter days of your period, you should be fine.
Can you get a Pap smear or pelvic exam on your period? The answer is yes! If youve scheduled an appointment with your gynecologist and youre on your period, there is no need to cancel the appointment. Normal vaginal bleeding should not get in the way of a Pap smear or pelvic exam.
The short answer is yes, you can visit the gynecologist during your period. You can even get a pelvic exam and some cancer screening tests. Plan to wear a pad to the doctors office, not a tampon. The Papanicolaou (Pap) and human papillomavirus (HVP) tests screen for cervical cancer.
The bottom line. There is no medical reason to cancel or reschedule your appointment because youre on your period. In fact, if the reason youre going to the doctor is that your menstrual cycle is causing your issues, its actually an ideal time for you to go.
Its still possible to get your Pap smear done despite being on your period. However, there may be a risk of inaccurate results, especially if your flow is heavy during the day of your exam. As a rule of thumb, its best to call your OB-GYN if you have a Pap scheduled and have unexpectedly started your period.
However, bleeding usually happens due to the cervix being irritated by the test, rather than an indicator that something is wrong. A small amount of blood (also known as spotting), is normal. Its quite common and it can happen for many reasons, which we talk through in the rest of this blog..
Can a gynecologist check you on your period? Yes, they will still be able to perform the examination. Rest assured that some normal vaginal bleeding will not interfere with a regular pelvic exam. If needed, a large, leak proof pad will be placed underneath you.
