CheyneStokes respiration is an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by progressively deeper, and sometimes faster, breathing followed by a gradual decrease that results in a temporary stop in breathing called an apnea. The pattern repeats, with each cycle usually taking 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Due to unstable central control and imprecise feedback support in patients with heart failure and stroke, the PCO2 levels during hyperventilation will fall below the apnea threshold levels, resulting in apnea again. These cycles of apnea and hypercapnia continue, resulting in Cheyne-Stokes respiration.
During diastole, your lower heart chambers (ventricles) relax as they fill with blood. Diastolic dysfunction may occur when your ventricles are stiff and dont relax properly. When this happens, your ventricles dont fill with blood as they should, and you may experience pressure buildup in your heart.
The normal pattern of LV diastolic filling in young healthy individuals is a short isovolumic relaxation time, a high early diastolic filling velocity (E-velocity), a steep early diastolic deceleration slope, and a smaller late diastolic filling velocity after atrial contraction (A-velocity) with a high ratio of early
Cheyne-Stokes respiration is an abnormal breathing pattern which commonly occurs in patients with decompensated congestive heart failure and neurologic diseases, in whom periods of tachypnea and hyperpnea alternate with periods of apnea.
People with severe left-sided heart failure may experience orthopnea, shortness of breath when lying down. This troubled breathing is caused by fluid accumulating in the lungs when you lie down. You may wake up wheezing or gasping for air, called paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea.
Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) is characterized by a pattern of cyclic oscillations of tidal volume and respiratory rate with periods of hyperpnea alternating with hypopnea or apnea in patients with heart failure.
Restrictive filling, characterised by a pronounced increase in the E/A ratio ( 2) and shortening of the E deceleration time ( 150 ms) is seen in the sickest ventricles and indicates severely reduced LV compliance and notable elevation of left atrial pressure.
