Pap test. During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2).
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer. This category is divided into several groups for squamous cells and glandular cells.
The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause cell changes on the cervix. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
To do a Pap test, your doctor will push apart the walls of your vagina using a device that looks like a duck beak (called a speculum). Then, he or she will use a small tool to collect cells from your cervix. The staff at a lab will look at those cells under a microscope to see if they are abnormal.
Pelvic exam You lie on your back on an exam table, bend your knees, and then place your feet in supports called stirrups at the end of the table. This position allows the doctor to look at or feel your cervix, uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and rectum.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.
In order to collect the cells needed for a Pap smear test, your gynecologist inserts a speculum into the vagina canal. The sample collection requires gentle scraping or pinching of the cervix and can be a bit uncomfortable.
During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. A Pap smear may also detect certain infections and inflammation. The test is named for an American physician, Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear.
