In television, film, stage, or photographic lighting, a fill light (often simply fill) may be used to reduce the contrast of a scene to match the dynamic range of the recording media and record the same amount of detail typically seen by eye in average lighting and considered normal.
Two simple ways to create fill light Reflectors. Reflectors are the simplest, cheapest, most basic method of creating fill light. Theyre also highly versatile. Flashes or studio strobes. You can always use one (or two, or many) standard speedlights or studio strobes as your fill light, in addition to your key light.
Fill light is used to evenly illuminate the entire scene. It is usually used for either highlighting shadows or for general alignment of lighting in the frame. The fill light is placed to the side of the camera and usually above it. Most often it is used when recording a video in which a person is present.
The three lights are: Key Light: a bright light placed to the right of the camera at a 45-degree angle. Fill Light: a less bright light placed where it can illuminate dark spots. Rim Light: another less bright light placed directly behind the subject.
In television, film, stage, or photographic lighting, a fill light (often simply fill) may be used to reduce the contrast of a scene to match the dynamic range of the recording media and record the same amount of detail typically seen by eye in average lighting and considered normal.
Just outside the Mobile Lab 1 itself, youll find a button, which, when pressed, will bring a spotlight over to your location.
The Key Light - This is the main light used on your subject. The Fill Light - The purpose of this light is to fill in the shadows created by the key light, preventing them from getting too dark. The Back Light - This is used to separate the subject from the background.
Turn up your flash power. This will add fill flash light to your photograph. To add a full stop of light from your flash, youll need to double its power. You can incrementally double your flash power from 1/16 to 1/8, from 1/8 to 1/4, from 1/4 to 1/2, and from 1/2 to full power.
In traditional three-point lighting, the fill light is a less powerful light that sits opposite the primary key light. From this different angle, it will literally fill in the high-contrast shadows that the key light creates on a subjects face.
The ring light works particularly well as a fill light because, being on-axis with the lens, it doesnt leave a telltale shadow. Then again, the catchlights in a subjects eyes will always give away your fill light technique if he/she is looking at the camera (a circular catchlight is hard to miss).
