A tax status letter provides details regarding liabilities, credits, or other outstanding issues for a specific taxpayer. This letter is not a verification of correct reporting. It is a snap shot in time of a taxpayers account and includes: Closed date or non-reporter status (if applicable)
The IRS sends notices and letters for the following reasons: You have a balance due. You are due a larger or smaller refund. We have a question about your tax return. We need to verify your identity.
However, if you dont agree with the letter, its important for you to respond. Write to explain why you disagree and include any information and documents you want the IRS to consider. Mail your reply to the address shown in the letter along with the bottom tear-off portion of the letter, if provided.
In order to receive tax treaty benefits, you must have tax residence with the treaty country and you must have the applicable tax ID (U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)).
An IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter (VNF) will provide proof from the IRS that there is no record of a filed tax form (1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) for the year you have requested. A VNF does not provide proof that you were not required to file, only that you did not file.
For complex investment transactions, particularly those with possible tax implications, you should be discussing the matter with your tax advisor before you make any final decisions. The purpose of a tax opinion letter is to justify your tax position, should it be called into question by the IRS.
The IRS sends notices and letters when it needs to ask a question about a taxpayers tax return, let them know about a change to their account or request a payment.
