Via filling, on the other hand, involves filling the via holes with a conductive material, usually copper, to establish electrical connections between different layers of the PCB. Via plugging is simpler and cost-effective compared to via filling, and it allows for greater design flexibility.
Via hole filling/plugging of a PCB is a process where the via hole is filled with solder mask or resin. Via holes that are filled/plugged improve the PCB reliability by decreasing the possibility of trapped air/liquid in the via, thus ensuring good yield through assembly.
Via tenting Vs. The hole can be partially filled with an LPI solder mask or the filling can be washed off. Plugged vias are fully filled. Through-hole vias should be tented on both sides to reduce the chances of any chemical entrapment. The material for filling can be applied on a single side or both sides.
Depending on their functionality, vias are classified as through-hole, blind, buried, and microvias.
Filling vias can improve their electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and thermal dissipation in PCBs. Based on your design and cost constraints, you can choose a suitable via fill.
Via hole filling/plugging of a PCB is a process where the via hole is filled with solder mask or resin.
Thermal vias (vias used to conduct heat away from a component) have been shown to marginally benefit from a conductive fill as the entire structure helps transmit thermal energy out and away from the source.
In the plugged vias process, vias are plugged with solder mask or some other non conductive media. LPI mask is then applied over plug. During the plugged vias process, no surface finish is applied to via barrel.
