Chevrons come in different sizes, depending on the rank of the marine, but are always placed on the collar with the points up. Position the chevrons. The bottom edge of the insignia (no matter what rank) will be 12 inch (1.3 cm) from the side of the collar on both sides.

The rate insignia for a petty officer, first class is a perched eagle above three chevrons. On more formal uniforms (dress white and dress blue uniform), the symbol for the petty officers rating will be placed between the eagle and the chevrons.
