How to Create an XML File Open your text editor of choice. On the first line, write an XML declaration. Set your root element below the declaration. Add your child elements within the root element. When using prefixes in XML, a namespace for the prefix must be defined. The namespace can be defined by an xmlns attribute in the start tag of an element. The namespace declaration has the following syntax. xmlns:prefix=URI.
By default, blank lines are preserved in a formatted document. Select Indent using tabs if you want to use tab characters (\t) as the standard formatting indentation, or, if you prefer to use spaces, select Indent using spaces.
Use the Formatting options page to specify how elements and attributes are formatted in your XML documents. To access XML formatting options, choose Tools Options Text Editor XML, and then choose Formatting.
With your Notepad++ opened, go to the Plugins tab and select XML Tools Pretty Print or Pretty Print indent attributes. Also, you can directly press the CTRL + ALT + Shift + A or CTRL + ALT + Shift + B hotkeys.
We do this by directly referencing the Unicode code point in decimal or hexadecimal form. These are standard XML entities meaning that theyre prefixed with an character and suffixed with a ; character. Decimal codepoints are then prefixed with a # character and hexadecimal ones with #x.
