First use a spatula for the exocervical specimen. Then use a cytobrush or the elongated end of the spatula for the endocervical sample. Rotate cytobrush 180 only. Place both specimens side-by-side lengthwise on a single slide and fix immediately.
Women who are 21 to 29 should have a Pap test alone every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Pap tests are preferred. Women who are 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have a Pap test and an HPV test (co-testing) every 5 years.
Certain things may interfere with a Pap test including: Menstruation. Using products such as vaginal creams, jellies, medicines, or spermicidal foams for 2 to 3 days before the Pap test. Douching for 2 to 3 days before a Pap test as douching can wash away surface cells.
Obtain an adequate sampling from the endocervix using an endocervical brush device. Insert the brush into the endocervical canal until only the bottom-most fibers are exposed. Slowly rotate or turn in one direction. DO NOT OVER ROTATE.
If you are between the ages of 21-65, you should receive a Pap smear every three years. If you are between the ages of 30-65, you should receive a Pap smear in combination with HPV testing every five years.
Before a Pap smear, also called a Pap test, you may be asked to: Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap test. These may wash away or hide concerning cells. Try not to schedule a Pap test during your menstrual period.
Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings.
