A non-compete agreement prohibits someone from working in the same business (or line of work) for a specific time period and geographical area.

For example, a television station might have legitimate concerns that a popular meteorologist may siphon viewers away if they began working for a rival station in the same area. This would be considered a reasonable cause to sign a non-compete agreement in most jurisdictions.

As you can see, non-competes are not enforceable in California, although other states currently allow them. Instead, you can opt for a non-disclosure agreement, or hire employees who live and work in other states.
