FATCA requires foreign financial institutions (FFIs) to report to the IRS information about financial accounts held by U.S. taxpayers, or by foreign entities in which U.S. taxpayers hold a substantial ownership interest.

A financial asset that is reported on Form 8938 (FATCA) does not necessarily need to be reported on your FBAR form and vice versa. There are some exceptions to these rules for financial accounts held in US Territories. The table below outlines what needs to be considered for each when verifying your obligation.
The purpose of FATCA is to prevent U.S. persons from using banks and other financial institutions outside the USA to park their wealth outside U.S. and consequently avoid U.S. taxation on income generated from such wealth.
FATCA applies to individual citizens, residents, and non-resident aliens. Residents and entities in U.S. territories must file FBARs but dont need to file FATCA forms.
Single individuals are required to file if their specified foreign financial assets exceed $200k at the end of the year, or $300k at any point during the year. Married couples are required to file if their specified foreign financial assets exceed $400k at the end of the year, or $600k at any point during the year.
