Your healthcare provider will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This will spread the walls of the vagina apart to show the cervix. Your healthcare provider will use a small brush, swab or spatula to gently remove cells from the cervix and back of the vagina.
A Pap test is mainly used to: screen for and help diagnose precancerous conditions of the cervix and cervical cancer. help diagnose precancerous conditions of the vagina and vaginal cancer. diagnose infection and inflammation in the lower female reproductive tract.
Pap Test Results Some of the sample collected will either be checked for signs of abnormal cells or HPV, or both. This will depend on factors such as your age and health history. Your results will be sent to you and your health care provider. You can also see your results online through Health Gateway.
It tests for a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). High risk HPV can cause cervical cells to become abnormal. Virtually all cases of cervical cancer are linked to high risk HPV. The cervix is part of the female reproductive system.
A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) screens for cervical cancer. The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
Rotate a spatula 360 once to obtain a single sample. Smear the sample onto the labeled slide. Fix the sample immediately (before it is air-dried) using a cytology spray fixative. Hold the fixative 15-20 cm (6 to 8 inches) away from the slide and evenly spray the slide by depressing the plunger 2 or 3 times.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
In addition, a Pap may check for certain sexually transmitted infections, such as, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Trichomonas. Some Pap tests also evaluate for infections such as Yeast and Bacterial Vaginosis.
A Pap test is a procedure that involves collecting cells from your cervix and examining them under a microscope. A Pap test can detect cervical cancer and changes in your cervical cells that may increase your risk of cervical cancer in the future.
