In general, detection limits for XPS range from 0.1 to 1 atomic percent. However there are cases where limits could be much better or much worse.
XPS instruments can detect all elements present except hydrogen and helium, with detection limits of ca. 0.1 atomic percent.
XPS stand for? XPS stands for XML Paper Specification. Thats because it contains page layout information written in the XML page description language. Essentially, this type of language describes the structure and content of a document, including its layout and appearance, making it suited for printing for example.
The average depth of analysis for an XPS measurement is approximately 5 nm. PHI XPS instruments provide the ability to obtain spectra with a lateral spatial resolution as small as 7.5 m. Spatial distribution information can be obtained by scanning the micro focused x-ray beam across the sample surface.
Typical samples for XPS are 5 mm to 10 mm square and up to 4 mm thick. Thicker samples may also be accommodated - please contact us for details.
XPS requires high vacuum (residual gas pressure p ~ 106 Pa) or ultra-high vacuum (p 107 Pa) conditions, although a current area of development is ambient-pressure XPS, in which samples are analyzed at pressures of a few tens of millibar.
