Si clauses, also known as conditionals or conditional sentences, are if-then constructions that express a condition to be met in order for a certain result to occur. The names can be misleading because not all conditionals include a verb in the conditional.
Si Clauses in the Present Indicative The present indicative is used to form conditional statements using si if the condition stated is true or probable. In this case, a verb in the present indicative tense follows the word si. For example: Si tengo dinero me ir de vacaciones.
The clauses can be in one of two orders: Either the si clause is followed by the result clause, or the result clause is followed by the si clause. Both work as long as the verb forms are paired correctly and si is placed in front of the condition. Je paierai si tu conduis. Ill pay if you drive.
Give some examples of clauses. As soon as I docHub the office (dependent or subordinate clause) I did not bring my umbrella. ( independent clause) When the little boy saw his mom (dependent or subordinate clause) Collect your parcel from the courier office. ( Though we left home early (dependent or subordinate clause)
The imperfect, or past, subjunctive is used to create the si clause while the conditional tense is used in the resulting clause. The imperfect subjunctive is used to show that the si clause is not reality. The conditional tense is similar to using the English word would.
They refer to the present, past, and future. These conditional sentences have two parts: the condition, or si clause, and the main or result clause which indicates what will happen if the condition of the si clause is met. The tense of the result clause depends on the tense of the si clause.
Its possible to use a verb in the past tense in the si-clause when the speaker expresses uncertainty or doubt. In this case you can use any tense in the past (preterite, imperfect, present perfect) paired with a verb in the present or the future in the main clause or in the imperative to give an order or request.
Si tengo tiempo, yo lo - If I have time, I will do it. Yo lo si tengo tiempo - I will do it if I have time. Si estudias, sers inteligente - If you study, you will be smart. Sers inteligente si estudias - You will be smart if you study.
