The small circle that you see instead of the space dot between words is a symbol that represents a nonbreaking space in Word. A nonbreaking space is a special type of space that prevents the words on either side of it from being separated at the end of a line.
To add a fill or effect, click your shape, click Format, click the arrow next to Shape Fill or Shape Effects, and select a color, gradient, texture, or effect. Click the shape that you want to fill.
