XPS (extruded polystyrene insulation) is manufactured using extrusion: a continuous process which results in a closed-cell structure with a smooth skin on the top and bottom of the board.
Cons of XPS: Higher cost compared to EPS. Heavier weight, which can make it more difficult to handle and . Lower R-value per inch of thickness compared to EPS.
DuPont and Owens Corning also produce a 100 psi board, and Owens Corning produces a 30 psi board. For specific applications, extruded polystyrene panels are available scored so they can be snapped at 16 intervals instead of cut.
Both are manufactured using the same process and contain similar chemical components. The two products also have the same insulating power. However, blue foam boards are manufactured by Dow Chemical Co. whereas the pink foam boards are manufactured by Owens Corning company.
Heres the answer: Adhesives from DuPont offer dependable, long-term service for a wide variety of applications and are compatible with most construction materials. The most commonly used adhesive with Styrofoam Brand XPS Insulation is Great Stuff Pro Construction Adhesive.
XPS: Pactiv, Dow, Johns Manville and Owens Corning all manufacture XPS insulation.
Styrofoam is a trademarked brand of closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam, or XPS. This foam is also referred to as Blue Board and is used for building insulation, thermal insulation and water barriers. Styrofoam is owned and manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company.
The most important difference between EPS and XPS is the amount of water absorbed by each. Although some EPS manufacturers attempt to disguise it, EPS absorbs more water than XPS. Absorbed water results in lost insulation power (R-value). Lost R-value results in reduced performance.
