Embalming preserves a body for at least one week or so. Embalming allows families up to seven days or more to docHub out to friends and family, and to conduct a formal viewing, funeral and burial service.
Open casket viewings often take place a week or a few days after the death so that the funeral home does not have to preserve the body for too long.
How quickly the body will decompose after embalming also depends on the strength of the embalming chemicals used. But even then, decomposition start after a week or so. So, if you plan on having an open-casket funeral, then you should not leave the embalmed body out for more than a week.
Can a body be viewed without being embalmed? Yes, however there may be a slightly shorter time frame in which you are able to view your loved one.
A common method of mouth closure is via needle injector. A needle with a barbed tip and with a wire attached is driven into the maxilla, behind the teeth, and another driven into the mandible. The two wires are then twisted together to bring the lower jaw up and close the mouth.
In the modern procedure of embalming, the blood is drained from one of the veins and replaced by a fluid, usually based on Formalin (a solution of formaldehyde in water), injected into one of the main arteries. Cavity fluid is removed with a long hollow needle called a trocar and replaced with preservative.
After two weeks, the body starts to bloat and change its color to red after the blood present in the body starts to decompose. Once the corpse surpasses the fourth week, you can witness liquefaction in the rest of the remains. The teeth and nails also begin to fall during this time frame.
Embalming is the process of introducing a disinfectant solution to the internal environment of the body when someone passes away. It delays changes to the body which occur after death, giving the deceased a more restful appearance and, in some situations, removing some visible effects of the cause of death.
