Maryland families may bury on their own property, ing to Maryland Code, Health-General, 5-514.
Does the Donated Body Program ever refuse to accept a body? Body donors must be free of infectious diseases such as HIV, AIDs, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. Donors body weight must be less than 250 lbs.
Upon completion of our studies, our donors are cremated and scattered by the University consistent with applicable law at no expense to the family. The length of study cannot be predicted at the time of donation, but typically range from 2 to 4 years.
The biggest drawback of donating your body is that your family cannot have a service with the body present. You can have a memorial service without a viewing. In some cases, the funeral home will allow for immediate family to have a closed viewing, much like an identification viewing.
Is Body Donation to Science Free? Upon acceptance into the Science Care program, there are no costs associated with your donation. We cover the cost of transportation, cremation, filing the death certificate and permits, and the cost of returning cremated remains to a designated recipient.
When donating your body to science through Science Cares program, cremation is always the final disposition. While a traditional viewing or open casket funeral is not possible, many families have a memorial service either with or without the cremated remains.
Registering as a whole-body donor is a separate process. It can be done through organizations such as Science Care or Humanity Gifts Registry, or sometimes directly with the departments of anatomy for medical institutions in your area.
Where can I donate my body to science in Maryland? In Maryland, bodies may be donated to the Maryland State Board of Anatomy, 1-800-879-2728. This board accepts bodies for all medical schools in Maryland as well as schools of dentistry, physical therapy, mortuary sciences, paramedics, etc.
