Updated cervical cancer screening guidelines from ACS recommend starting screening at age 25 with an HPV test and having HPV testing every 5 years through age 65. However, testing with an HPV/Pap cotest every 5 years or with a Pap test every 3 years is still acceptable.
If you are under 25, talk to your family doctor or nurse practitioner about whether you should wait until age 25 before starting cervical screening with the Pap test. You can stop regular screening with Pap tests at the age of 70 if you have had 3 or more normal tests in the previous 10 years.
The USPSTF recommends screening for cervical cancer in women age 21 to 65 years with cytology (Pap smear) every 3 years or, for women ages 30 to 65 years who want to lengthen the screening interval, screening with a combination of cytology and HPV testing every 5 years (A recommendation).
In 2017, the Pap test (commonly referred to as the Pap smear test) was replaced with the Cervical Screening Test. The Cervical Screening Test is a better test that can detect the risk of developing cervical cancer a lot earlier than the Pap test did.
After age 65, you can stop having cervical cancer screenings if you have never had abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer, and youve had two or three negative screening tests in a row, depending on the type of test.
Cervical cancer is also rare in this age group. Starting at age 25 means we prevent a lot of unnecessary tests and treatment. Of course, if youve already had a test and had an abnormal result, keep following your doctors advice. If you have any of the symptoms below, talk to your doctor, nurse or health worker.
Follow these Guidelines: If you are younger than 21You do not need screening. If you are 21 to 29 Have a Pap test alone every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Pap tests are preferred.
In 2012, however, all three organizations recommended that 1) screening by Papanicolau (Pap) test should not be used for women aged
