There is no upper age limit to an ACL reconstruction because it is mainly dependent upon the patients activity levels, other medical problems, and if they have instability. For those older patients, we will commonly place them into ACL braces to see if that will be sufficient to restore their stability and function.
You may be able to fully heal with less invasive options, like physical therapy and knee bracing, but your knee might still need more gentle treatment after you recover if you dont opt for surgical repair. Many patients prefer to skip surgical treatment and work on adapting, especially after the age of 40.
ACL tears, even at grade 2, may warrant surgery if pain is severe. Lifestyle: If you have a partial tear and lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle, you may not need surgical reconstruction. Growth plates: If your growth plates are still open (only applicable to children), surgery may not be required for a partial tear.
ACL tears are most common between the ages of 15 and 45, mostly due to the more active lifestyle and higher participation in sports.
Age and ACL Surgery Outcomes Research suggests that timely ACL reconstruction in younger patients may yield favorable outcomes, with a focus on restoring knee stability and preventing secondary damage to the menisci and articular cartilage.
Surgery is generally accepted as safe for teens and children who have a torn ACL that needs repair. It may not be necessary in all cases, but when it is, there is a good chance the knee function will be restored.
People of all ages, physical conditions, and abilities can tear an ACL. Active, young, females experience a higher incidence of ACL injuries than males of the same age because of a multitude of factors, including landing mechanics, anatomy of the knee joint, inherent looseness of tissues.
ACL tears are common and repairable in young athletes. However, ACL injuries can also become a problem for older patients. At the Center for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine of Tomball and Kingwood, Texas, specialist Michael L. Blackwell, MD, and his team effectively treat ACL injuries in patients of all ages.
