When does rehabilitation start after an ACL reconstruction? On the day of surgery. Patients are given a set of exercises to start immediately in the recovery room.
When the patient can control their range of motion progression, their perceived threat is reduced and motion often comes back easier. Knee flexion is restored more gradually, with about 90 degrees achieved at 1 week and full knee flexion gradually advanced and achieved by week 4-6.
The prognosis (outlook) for a partially torn ACL is often good, with the recovery and rehabilitation period usually lasting at least 3 months. However, some patients with partial ACL tears may still have instability symptoms.
Some mild, partial ACL tears can heal on their own, while other tears require surgery. The only way to know if surgery is the right choice for your ACL injury is to have Dr. Nickson evaluate your injury using advanced diagnostic techniques.
Phase II: 2-6 weeks after surgery Phase two is also where you will begin to work on strengthening your knee. Your physical therapist should begin introducing you to exercises such as the stationary bike, stair climber, and elliptical machine.
Rest: 0 to 2 weeks after ACL surgery For the first couple of weeks after surgery, you will need to rest and care for the incision site. Prop your leg at the calf or ankle on a couple of pillows four to six times a day. This helps reduce swelling.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
Many people hear a pop or feel a popping sensation in the knee when an ACL injury occurs. Your knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight.
Treatment Rest. General rest is necessary for healing and limits weight bearing on your knee. Ice. When youre awake, try to ice your knee at least every two hours for 20 minutes at a time. Compression. Wrap an elastic bandage or compression wrap around your knee. Elevation.
The first line of treatment for ACL injury involves resting, icing, and elevating the leg. An anti-inflammatory medication can also decrease pain and swelling, Dr. Rodeo says. In some cases when people do not require a return to pivoting sports, physical therapy can strengthen the joint without surgery, he explains.
