By default, in standard LaTeX classes the default style for text is usually a Roman (upright) serif font. To use other styles (families) such as sans serif, typewriter (monospace) etc. you need to use some specific LaTeX commands, as shown in the example below: In this example, a command and a switch are used.
The default LaTeX font is Computer Modern, which I think is less compact than Times. Aubergine: One solution, if you dont necessarily need the default LaTeX font, is to just use Times or Palatino or something in your final document.
The command \textsc{ } will convert letters into small caps. {\scshape } acts as a switch to turn small caps on within a group of braces; in particular, it can combine with other formatting switches. \sc is deprecated.
LaTeX includes a default font family known as Computer Modern, designed by Donald Knuth, the creator of TeX (the system on which LaTeX is based). Besides, computer Modern includes several fonts, each with different sizes and styles, including Roman (serif), Sans-serif, and Typewriter (monospace).
Standard font series In LaTeX, the series is a combination of two attributes: width and weight (boldness). LaTeX allows changing the series with two commands: \textmd and \textbf . The corresponding declarations are \mdseries and \bfseries , respectively.
What font does LaTeX use for math? In LaTeX, the default font used for math mode is typically Computer Modern. However, you can also use different fonts by specifying them in your LaTeX document preamble using packages.
The popular LaTeX font typefaces are originated from four families: Computer Modern (default in standard LaTeX classes): CM Roman, CM Sans Serif, CM Typewriter. Latin Modern: LM Roman, LM Sans Serif, LM Typewriter, LM Dunhill. Post Script Fonts: Times, Utopia/Fourier, Palatino, Bookman, Helvetica, Courier.
