Fainting, or passing out, is usually caused by a drop in blood pressure, which reduces blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Most fainting spells are nothing to worry about. But talk to a healthcare provider if you lose consciousness repeatedly or have any other symptoms.
Most people will recover quickly after fainting once they lie down as more blood flows to the brain. It also helps to loosen any constrictive clothing. After they wake up, have them stay lying down or sitting for a while longer until theyre feeling better. Give them water to help them stay hydrated.
If you have fainted, you should see a physician or visit an emergency room right away to identify the cause of your fainting and to ensure you do not have a serious underlying condition. Generally, fainting indicates a drop in blood pressure resulting in too little blood (and, hence, oxygen) docHubing your brain.
If you feel these symptoms, lay down or sit down and do not get up until you feel your body has returned to normal, he says.If youve had fainting episodes in the past, be on the lookout for the following symptoms: Lightheadedness or dizziness. Tunnel vision. Nausea. Perspiration or clamminess.
If fainting occurs frequently and is not because of dehydration or sudden postural change, you may need to be tested for a serious heart or vascular condition. Cardiac syncope often occurs suddenly, without dizziness or other pre-syncope symptoms.
What to do if someone faints? React and call. If someone is standing when they faint, catch them, gently lower them to the floor and call 911. Check Vitals. Examine the person and check for breathing, a pulse, and anything lodged in the throat. Reposition. Monitor.
A drug called acetate thats normally used to treat low blood pressure may be helpful in preventing vasovagal syncope. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors also may be used.
While it might be easier to just try and forget about your fainting episode, it is best to stay on top of it. Give your physician or cardiologist a call and get checked out.
Many different conditions can cause fainting. These include heart problems such as irregular heart beats, seizures, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), anemia (a deficiency in healthy oxygen carrying cells), and problems with how the nervous system (the bodys system of nerves) regulates blood pressure.
Position the person on his or her back. If there are no injuries and the person is breathing, raise the persons legs above heart level about 12 inches (30 centimeters) if possible. Loosen belts, collars or other constrictive clothing. To reduce the chance of fainting again, dont get the person up too quickly.
