Isometric contraction of the muscles of the hands, arms, hands, feet, and legs can immediately stop the vasovagal reaction in its tracks and prevent fainting.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.
Vasovagal syncope causes Vasovagal syncope happens when you have a sudden drop in blood pressure, which causes a drop in blood flow to your brain. It often occurs after standing for a while or under emotional distress.
Cervical vasovagal shock is termed as stimulation either by instruments or products of conception at cervical os results into bradycardia and hypotension. In primary care settings cervical vasovagal shock can occur during insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) or any cervical stimulation during physical examination.
The vagal response (vasovagal reflex) is when stimulation of the vagus nerve causes symptoms such as lightheadedness, sweating, and blurred vision. This can happen because of stress, pain, heat, having a bowel movement, or even standing too long.
Tensing your arms or crossing your legs can help prevent fainting. Passively raising or propping up your legs in the air can also help. To immediately treat someone who has fainted from vasovagal syncope, help the person lie down and lift their legs up in the air.
You should feel well enough to resume normal activity immediately. Bleeding or brownish-black discharge is normal for several days. Avoid intercourse and tampon use for 72 hours after the colposcopy if biopsies were taken. If at anytime you are bleeding so heavily that you soak through a maxi pad call our office.
Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
