John sweet egg here from sweet egg Medical Center letamp;#39;s talk about why people pass out when they see blood or have their blood drawn so the topic that came up a couple times in the last few days so letamp;#39;s talk about it so the body has a fight-or-flight mechanism as you know whenever it docHubes challenges one of the components of this is called the vasovagal reflex and when itamp;#39;s activated you can have whatamp;#39;s called vasovagal syncope basically the body will slow the heart down and dilate all the blood vessels this can lead to wooziness or if itamp;#39;s bad enough you can pass out usually itamp;#39;s very self limited and it involves them itamp;#39;s a reflex through the brainstem like I said we believe it has something to do with a fight-or-flight I think the brain senses that thereamp;#39;s blood loss the the brains design or the whole body is designed to keep the blood loss to a minimum so it actually slows the heart down in this case

Defecation syncope is a relatively rare disorder that occurs typically in middle-aged or older individuals and affects women more often than men. More than one third of patients with defecation syncope die within 2 years of complications of their underlying diseases.
If a patient faints during the venipuncture, immediately abort the procedure by gently removing the tourniquet and needle from the patients arm, applying gauze and pressure to the skin puncture site, and calling for assistance. If the patient is seated, place the patients head between his/her knees.
