Cardiogenic syncope: This type of syncope is heart-related, caused by either an abnormal heart rhythm or structural damage to the heart. This is a dangerous form of syncope.
Most often, there is a warning prodrome, consisting of nausea, sweating, pallor, feeling of warmth, tingling of extremities, graying out and/or tunnel vision. This prodrome usually affords the patient a warning, allowing time to brace for a fall, thereby preventing serious injury.
In fact, some neurologists suggest that fainting is the bodys way of protecting itself after an injury to reduce blood loss. When you experience sudden pain, your heart rate and blood pressure can rapidly decrease, which affects the amount of blood flowing to your brain.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly.
Vasovagal (vagal nerve) syncope When the vagus nerve is stimulated, excess acetylcholine is released, the heart rate slows and the blood vessels dilate, making it harder for blood to defeat gravity and be pumped to the brain. This temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain causes the fainting episode.
Red flag symptoms - Exertional onset, chest pain, dyspnea, low back pain, palpitations, severe headache, focal neurologic deficits, diplopia, ataxia, or dysarthria.
The 3 Ps of vasovagal syncope Posture prolonged standing, or similar episodes that have been prevented by lying down. Provoking factors (such as pain or a medical procedure) Prodromal symptoms (such as sweating or feeling warm/hot before TLoC).
In most cases of vasovagal syncope, you have some warning that you are near fainting. These signs include dizziness, feeling hot or cold, nausea, pale skin, tunnel-like vision, disturbance of hearing, and profuse sweating. After the episode, symptoms may continue because of continued low blood pressure.
