The main cause of the peak shift in XPS spectra is mostly related to chemical shifts due to the presence or absence of the chemical states of the element having different formal oxidation state. And the intensity may also be changed bcos it is directly linked to the number of atoms in the respective chemical state.
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.

Accurate determination of FWHM is crucial to ensure that the spectral data meets the requirements of pharmacopoeial standards among others. Understanding the FWHM is vital for optimizing experimental design, interpreting spectroscopic data accurately and ensuring the precise analysis of complex mixtures.
Resolution in Imaging Techniques: FWHM is commonly used to quantify the spatial resolution of imaging systems such as X-ray imaging, MRI, PET, and SPECT. A smaller FWHM indicates higher spatial resolution, enabling better visualization of anatomical structures and finer details in medical images.
The FWHM of the XRD peak is not only related to state of stress, plastic deformation in the material and grain size 2527 but also provides important information about the nature and symmetry of crystals of the work material in question 28.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
Full width at half maximum, more commonly known as FWHM, is a statistical measure used to describe the width of a normal distribution or Gaussian distribution. Specifically, it represents the width of a curve measured between the two points where the curves value is half its maximum.
