The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. A Pap smear may also detect certain infections and inflammation.
An abnormal Pap test or HPV test result may mean more testing is needed to see if a cancer or a pre-cancer is present. The tests that are used include colposcopy (with biopsy), endocervical scraping and cone biopsies.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Most of the time, early cervical cancer has no symptoms. Symptoms that may occur include: Abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause. Vaginal discharge that does not stop, and may be pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling.
The test checks for: Cervical cancer. Potentially precancerous cells in the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia). Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that increases the risk of cervical cancer.
A pap test, also known as a pap smear, is a medical examination that identifies precancerous cells on the cervix in order to avoid cervical cancer. Although a pap smear does not intend to test for sexually transmitted illnesses, human papillomavirus (HPV) can be discovered during a pap smear.
Increased vaginal discharge, which may be pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling. Abnormal vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods, after sex, douching or a pelvic exam. Longer or heavier menstrual periods. Bleeding after menopause.
Some conditions that cause abnormal Pap smear results can produce uncomfortable symptoms, such as: Pain, itching or burning around the genital area during sexual intercourse or urination. Unusual vaginal discharge. Rashes, sores, warts or bumps around the genital area.
