Broken white lines are used to mark the middle of a two lane highway to separate traffic on both directions. Drivers are supposed to keep left but can cross the broken line for overtaking if situations permit. Hazard warning line.
White lane markings are the most common. Solid white lines define lanes of traffic going in the same direction, or they show you the location of the shoulder of the road. Broken or dotted white lines are used to show the center line between lanes.
A single solid white line marks traffic lanes going in the same direction. This includes one-way streets.
Diagonal white lines (hatched markings) bounded by broken lines may be used in the centre of the road to separate opposing flows of traffic. They are often provided at junctions to protect traffic turning right.
Prior to a given storm event, the Superintendent of Public Works may have crews apply liquid sodium chloride called Brine on the roads. This Brine turns white leaving the roads residual coated with salt which prevents ice bonding to the road surface.
Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right. If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
If the dotted line appears on your driving lane, then you can pass the line and overtake when it is safe to do so. At the same time, the opposite traffic is not allowed to overtake.
Solid yellow center lines indicate two-way traffic moving in opposite direction with no passing allowed. Always keep to the right of the yellow line. Broken yellow center line means passing is permitted in either direction.
